The video above is an animation I created during some recent research. It depicts one component of a conservative finite element approximation of a solution to a system of partial differential equations of Korteweg-de Vries type, a paradigm class of equations for the study of nonlinear, dispersive PDE. Note the solitary waves that appear over time and how they surf the dispersive tail!
